Chapter 24 - Everything is normal.....?

The next morning felt almost too normal. Sunlight spread softly across the school building, students filled the corridors with their usual chatter, and everything looked exactly the way it always had. Laughter, footsteps, and the distant ringing of the bell created a familiar rhythm. But for Aarav, that normalcy felt fake—like a thin layer hiding something much darker underneath. As he walked into the classroom, his eyes instinctively scanned everything around him. The desks, the windows, the walls… nothing looked different. And yet, he couldn't shake the feeling that something was watching him.

"Bro, relax." Rayan's voice broke his thoughts. He was leaning back in his chair, spinning a pen like always, completely unfazed. "You're staring at the walls like they owe you money." Aarav exhaled and sat down, rubbing the back of his neck. "Didn't sleep well." Rayan smirked. "Yeah, after yesterday's haunted classroom episode, I wouldn't either. And I don't get scared easily." Aarav glanced at him. "You got scared when a dog barked at you." Rayan straightened instantly. "That dog had bad intentions." For a brief moment, everything felt normal again.

But Meera didn't smile. She sat quietly, her notebook open, but her eyes weren't on the page. They were fixed on Aarav. Observing him carefully. "Something's off," she said calmly. Aarav avoided her gaze. "Everything's off." She shook her head slightly. "Not everything. Just you." Her words landed harder than expected, but before Aarav could respond, the teacher entered, and the class settled into routine. Books opened, notes began, and for a while, it felt like things might actually stay normal.

A few minutes later, Aarav noticed something unusual. Rayan had slipped a small device under his desk. It was crude but clever—wires, a tiny screen, and a blinking green light. "What is that?" Aarav whispered. Rayan didn't look up. "Prototype." Aarav frowned. "Of what?" Rayan smirked faintly. "An abnormal activity detector." Aarav blinked in surprise. "You made that?" "Obviously," Rayan replied. "Yesterday wasn't normal. So I thought… why not track it?" For the first time, Aarav actually looked impressed.

Meera leaned in slightly. "Is it working?" Rayan's expression shifted as he glanced at the device. "That's the problem." The green light flickered… then turned yellow. A second later, it shifted to orange. Rayan's smirk disappeared completely. "Yeah… it's definitely working." Aarav felt it again—that same strange heaviness in the air. Subtle, but impossible to ignore. Meera immediately turned toward the window, her eyes narrowing slightly. "It's not random," she murmured. Aarav looked at her. "What isn't?" She pointed subtly toward the far end of the corridor. "Yesterday's crack… it appeared in the same direction. This isn't coincidence."

Rayan checked his device again. The signals were rising rapidly. "Whatever it is, it's coming from there." Aarav's chest tightened. "So what are we waiting for?" Meera looked at him, serious. "We shouldn't rush into this." Aarav stood up anyway. "If something's coming, we need to know." Rayan stared at him for a second before sighing. "I seriously need better friends." Meera closed her notebook and stood as well. "You're not going alone."

The corridor outside felt different. At first, everything seemed normal—students talking, lockers opening, casual movement. But as they walked further toward the end, the noise slowly faded. The air grew heavier, thicker, almost suffocating. Rayan glanced at his device. The light had turned red. "That's… not a good sign," he whispered. Aarav stopped walking. His eyes locked onto the wall ahead.

There it was. A faint, almost invisible crack. Unlike before, it wasn't spreading. It was just there… waiting. Aarav stepped closer, his heartbeat strangely steady. Behind him, Meera's voice cut through the silence. "Aarav, don't." But he didn't listen. Something was pulling him toward it. His hand slowly lifted, inching closer to the wall.

The moment his fingers touched it, the whisper returned.

"You're getting closer…"

Aarav froze. His breath caught in his throat. "No…" he muttered under his breath. Behind him, Rayan stepped back slightly. "Okay… I definitely heard something." The crack pulsed faintly—not outward, but inward, like something breathing from the other side. Meera quickly grabbed Aarav's arm. "Step back. Now."

But Aarav didn't move.

His reflection appeared faintly in the glass panel beside the wall. For a moment, everything looked normal. Then slowly… the reflection tilted its head. Aarav's didn't. A cold chill ran down his spine as he stared at it.

And then…

The reflection smiled.

Aarav didn't.
