Chapter 27 - When they all came

The corridor no longer felt like part of their world. The lights flickered unevenly, shadows stretching unnaturally across the walls, as if they were alive. Rayan's device emitted sharp, irregular beeps, each one louder than the last, almost like a warning that something far worse was about to happen. Aarav stood still for a moment, his breathing controlled but heavy, his eyes fixed ahead. The mark on his wrist pulsed slowly, sending cold waves through his arm, like something inside him was waking up again—stronger this time.

"They're not just close," Rayan said, his voice tense, barely steady. "They're already here."

As if responding to his words, the walls cracked again. But this time, it wasn't slow. Thin fractures shot across the surface like lightning, spreading rapidly in multiple directions. The sound that followed wasn't just a whisper—it was louder, layered, like multiple voices trying to break through at once. The temperature dropped so suddenly that their breath became visible in the air.

Meera stepped forward slightly, her eyes scanning every direction. "Stay together," she said, her tone sharp and commanding. "Don't let them split us."

Before Aarav could respond, the first crack tore open violently. A creature slipped through—not crawling this time, but falling forward unnaturally before straightening in a jerking motion. Its body flickered like a broken image, parts of it disappearing and reappearing rapidly. Then another crack opened. And another. Within seconds, three… then four creatures surrounded them, each one different, each one more disturbing than the last.

One creature moved low to the ground, its limbs bending in unnatural angles as it circled them slowly. Another stood tall but unstable, its form glitching as if it couldn't hold its shape. A third one seemed almost fused with the wall, fading in and out of sight like a shadow refusing to stay still. And the fourth… didn't move at all. It simply stood there, its presence heavier than the others, as if it was waiting.

Rayan took a slow step back, his grip tightening on the device. "Okay… yeah… this is definitely not survivable," he muttered.

"We don't have a choice," Meera replied immediately. "We fight smart, or we don't make it out."

The creatures attacked almost at the same time.

The low-moving one lunged first, its body twisting as it rushed toward Aarav with sudden speed. Aarav reacted instantly, stepping forward instead of back, meeting it head-on. He dodged its strike and countered with force, pushing it aside. But before he could recover, the tall flickering creature attacked from the side, its arm stretching unnaturally toward him.

"Aarav, left!" Meera shouted.

He turned just in time, barely blocking the hit. The impact pushed him back, his feet sliding slightly across the floor. The strength behind it was far greater than before. These creatures weren't just random—they were adapting.

"Rayan!" Meera called out. "Track their movement!"

"I'm trying!" he said, his fingers moving rapidly across the device. "But their signals keep shifting—it's like they're not fully here!"

"That's because they're not," Meera replied sharply. "They're crossing over."

Aarav barely had time to process that before the third creature disappeared into the wall. One second it was there—next second, gone.

"Where did it—" Rayan started.

"Don't lose focus!" Meera snapped.

Aarav's instincts kicked in just in time. He turned sharply, blocking an attack from behind as the same creature reappeared out of nowhere. The impact shook him. Three directions. No clear pattern. No space to breathe.

His chest tightened. The mark on his wrist pulsed harder. The cold sensation spread deeper, faster.

"You can't handle this…" the voice whispered again.

Aarav clenched his jaw. "I don't need you," he muttered under his breath.

But the pressure kept increasing. The creatures began moving faster now, more coordinated, almost like they were learning from each other. Aarav dodged one, blocked another, but the third hit landed—just barely—forcing him back again.

"This is bad!" Rayan said. "They're syncing up!"

Meera's eyes sharpened. "Aarav, listen to me. They're reacting to your energy. Use it."

"What?" Aarav shouted, barely keeping up.

"Trigger the mark," she said firmly. "Draw them toward you. Control their focus."

"That sounds like a terrible idea!" Rayan added.

"It's the only one we have," Meera replied.

For a split second, Aarav hesitated. Then he took a deep breath and focused on the mark. Instantly, it responded. The pulse grew stronger, the cold turning sharper, spreading through his arm like controlled fire.

The creatures reacted immediately. All of them turned toward him at once.

"Yeah… they definitely noticed that," Rayan said nervously.

"Now move!" Meera commanded.

Aarav ran forward, pulling all of them with him. At the last moment, he shifted direction sharply. The creatures followed—but there was a delay. A small one, but enough.

"They're predictable now!" Meera said.

Aarav turned and attacked. This time, his movements were faster, more precise. He struck one creature, then moved before the others could react. For a moment, it worked. He was controlling the fight.

But the mark pulsed again.

Stronger.

"You're still holding back…" the voice whispered.

Aarav's expression changed slightly. His breathing became heavier. His control… started slipping.

"Aarav, stop!" Meera warned. "Don't go further!"

But the energy surged anyway.

His movements became sharper. More aggressive. Less controlled.

He grabbed one creature mid-attack and slammed it into the ground with force, its form breaking apart for a second. The others attacked together, but this time—he didn't step back.

He blocked both attacks and pushed forward, overpowering them with raw strength.

"This power…" the voice whispered. "This is who you are…"

"Aarav!" Meera shouted again. "You're losing it!"

For a moment, he didn't respond.

Then suddenly—

Everything stopped.

The creatures froze mid-movement. Completely still.

Rayan blinked in confusion. "Okay… that's new."

Meera's expression darkened. "No… this isn't good."

The cracks on the walls began spreading again. Faster. Larger. Darker than before. The air grew heavier, almost suffocating.

Aarav felt the mark burn this time—not just pulse.

Something stronger was coming.

Something far beyond what they had just faced.

And for the first time… even Aarav felt a hint of fear.
