Chapter 28 - The one who command

The corridor no longer felt like just a part of the school—it felt like something alive, something watching. The creatures that had been attacking moments ago now stood completely still, their twisted bodies frozen as if time itself had stopped. The silence wasn't normal. It was heavy, unnatural, pressing down on Aarav, Meera, and Rayan like an invisible weight. Even breathing felt harder, slower.

Rayan glanced at his device, his fingers moving quickly before suddenly stopping. The screen had gone blank. No signals, no readings—nothing. "That's… not possible," he muttered under his breath. "It's like everything just shut down." But deep inside, he knew this wasn't a malfunction. Something had forced it.

Meera didn't take her eyes off the wall ahead. A thin crack had begun to form, spreading slowly but with purpose. Unlike before, it wasn't chaotic. It was controlled. "It didn't stop," she said quietly, her voice steady but serious. "Something made it stop."

Aarav felt a sharp burning sensation on his wrist. The mark. It pulsed stronger than ever, almost reacting to whatever was coming. He clenched his fist, trying to ignore it, but the feeling only grew. "It's happening again…" he said, his voice lower now.

The crack suddenly widened. Not with a loud explosion—but with force. The darkness inside didn't look empty. It moved, shifting like it had its own will. And then, slowly, something stepped out.

It didn't rush like the others. It didn't twitch or move uncontrollably. It walked forward with calm, deliberate steps. And the moment it appeared, the other creatures lowered themselves slightly, almost like they were bowing. That single detail was enough to change everything.

Rayan instinctively stepped back. "Yeah… no. This is different," he said nervously. "I really don't like this."

Meera's expression hardened. "This isn't just another creature," she said. "This is the one controlling them."

Aarav couldn't move for a moment. The mark on his wrist was now burning intensely, syncing with the presence in front of him. It felt like his body was reacting on its own. The creature tilted its head slightly, its attention fixed only on him.

A voice echoed—not in the corridor, but inside Aarav's mind. It was deep, distorted, yet clear enough to understand. It didn't feel like sound. It felt like pressure.

Aarav's eyes widened slightly. "Did you hear that?" he asked, looking at the others.

"Hear what?" Rayan replied instantly.

Meera didn't speak immediately. She was watching Aarav closely now. "It's talking to you," she said after a pause. It wasn't a question.

Aarav didn't answer. But his silence confirmed everything.

The creature stepped closer. The ground beneath it darkened with each movement, as if it was spreading something with every step. Aarav felt the pressure increase, his breathing becoming uneven.

"I'm not like you," Aarav said firmly, forcing himself to stand his ground.

The creature stopped. There was no reaction at first—just stillness. Then it slowly raised its arm. Instantly, the surrounding creatures began to move again, closing in from all sides.

Rayan swallowed nervously. "Yeah… that's definitely a command," he said. "And I'm pretty sure we're in serious trouble now."

Meera stepped slightly forward, her voice sharper. "Aarav, don't rush this. This isn't about strength." She paused for a second before adding, "It never was."

But Aarav had already moved. He charged forward, faster than before, his movements sharper, stronger. For a brief moment, it looked like he might actually be keeping up. His strikes landed harder, driven by the energy from the mark.

Then everything changed.

The creature blocked his attack effortlessly. It caught his arm mid-strike and stopped him completely, as if his strength meant nothing. The difference between them became clear in that single moment.

Aarav struggled against the grip. "You're not even trying… are you?" he said, his voice strained.

There was no reply—but the silence itself felt like an answer.

With a single motion, the creature threw him back. Aarav crashed hard against the wall, the impact knocking the breath out of him. For a moment, everything went quiet again.

"Aarav!" Rayan shouted, stepping forward but stopping himself.

Aarav tried to get up, but the pressure increased again. The mark burned even stronger now, almost uncontrollable. His vision blurred slightly as something inside him started to shift.

"Don't listen to it!" Meera shouted. "That's what it wants!"

But it was already too late.

The creatures surrounded him again, closing every possible escape. Aarav's breathing slowed, his body going still—not out of weakness, but because something inside him was changing.

For a second, nothing happened.

Then, slowly, Aarav pushed himself up.

When he lifted his head, something was different. The hesitation in his eyes was gone. The fear had disappeared completely. What remained was something darker… something far more dangerous.

The air around him felt colder.

And this time—he didn't look like he was losing.

Aarav has changed… but is it for better or worse?

Will Meera be able to stop him… or is it already too late?
