Chapter 21 — Quiet Alliances

The council meeting had ended hours ago, but the tension it left behind lingered like a storm waiting to break.

Koryn Zod walked quickly through the corridors outside the council complex. His thoughts churned with anger, confusion, and fear.

They knew.

Or at least some of them suspected.

Yet the council debated budgets and military allocations while Krypton itself slowly died beneath their feet.

Koryn clenched his fists.

How can they ignore this?

He found the answer easily.

Power.

Control.

Panic would weaken the council's authority. And those who had ruled Krypton for centuries would never willingly risk that.

But one thing still bothered him.

Von-Ra had known the truth… and had chosen to act.

Koryn finally located him inside one of the research halls.

Von-Ra stood over a projection of Krypton's internal structure, streams of data floating around him in quiet motion. His golden eyes studied the shifting energy flows with relentless focus.

"Knew I'd find you here," Koryn said.

Von-Ra didn't look away from the projection.

"You spoke to your father."

Koryn blinked. "How did you—"

"You're predictable."

Koryn exhaled sharply.

"…He said the council likely already knows."

That made Von-Ra pause.

Slowly he turned toward him.

"And now you understand the real problem."

Koryn ran a hand through his hair in frustration.

"So what now? If the council suppresses the truth, if they refuse to act… what do we do?"

Von-Ra's gaze returned to the holographic planet.

"We prepare," he said quietly.

"For what?"

"For the moment when the truth can no longer be hidden."

Koryn frowned.

"That's not a plan."

"It's the only realistic one."

Von-Ra began manipulating the projection again, running new simulations.

"I'm building stabilization models," he explained. "Emergency countermeasures. Evacuation possibilities. Energy redistribution."

Koryn stared at him.

"You're planning for emergency planetary collapse. as if you are sure it will happened."

"I'm planning for survival."

Silence filled the laboratory.

Then Koryn nodded slowly.

"Then I'm with you."

Von-Ra looked at him.

"For now," Koryn added with a faint smirk. "Don't think this ends our rivalry."

Von-Ra almost smiled.

inside the House of El

Later that evening, a much quieter meeting took place far from the council chamber.

Inside the private hall of House of El stood several figures whose combined influence stretched across Krypton's scientific and political landscape.

Zor-El stood near the central console, reviewing planetary data.

Beside him stood his brother, Jor-El.

Across from them were Alura In-Ze and Lara Lor-Van.

The final figure entering the chamber was General Dru-Zod.

The room fell silent for a moment.

Dru-Zod was the first to speak.

"So. The El family finally calls for cooperation."

Zor-El folded his arms.

"You already know why we're here."

Dru-Zod nodded once.

"The core."

Alura-Ze El stepped forward.

"The council refuses to act. They suppress information. If nothing changes, Krypton will eventually collapse."

Lara-Val El spoke next, her tone calm but firm.

"Which means we cannot rely on the council."

Jor-El activated a projection of the planetary core.

Energy fractures spread slowly through the image.

"This began decades ago," he said. "We estimate a long-term destabilization that could eventually destroy the planet."

Dru-Zod studied the projection carefully.

"And you are only now telling me?"

Zor-El answered honestly.

"We suspected you already knew."

A faint smile crossed the general's face.

"I did."

Silence followed that statement.

Alura broke it.

"Then you understand why we asked you here."

Dru-Zod clasped his hands behind his back.

"You want an alliance."

"Not political," Jor-El said.

"Practical."

Zor-El continued.

"House of El controls much of Krypton's scientific infrastructure. House of Zod commands a large portion of the military. House of Ze controls several planetary resource networks."

Lara finished the thought.

"If we combine those assets, we may be able to prepare for what the council refuses to face."

Dru-Zod remained silent for a moment.

Then he spoke.

"My loyalty is to Krypton," he said.

"Not to the council."

Alura nodded.

"Then we share the same goal."

"But understand something," Dru-Zod continued. "If the council discovers this cooperation, they will call it treason."

Jor-El gave a quiet smile.

"They already consider us dangerous."

Zor-El glanced toward the doorway, where distant footsteps echoed faintly through the corridor.

"Our children may inherit a dying world if we do nothing."

Dru-Zod's gaze hardened.

"Then we do something."

He looked at each of them in turn.

"The Zod military forces will quietly support your research operations."

Alura exchanged a look with Lara.

Jor-El nodded once.

"And the El family will continue developing solutions."

For the first time in the meeting, the tension eased slightly.

Not because the problem was solved.

But because they were no longer facing it alone.

Dru-Zod turned toward the exit.

"One more thing."

The others looked at him.

"Your son," he said to Zor-El.

"Von-Ra."

Zor-El's expression remained neutral.

"What about him?"

Dru-Zod's voice carried quiet respect.

"He understands the situation better than most councilors."

Jor-El allowed himself a faint smile.

"He always has."
