I had to run, to flee from here.
My heart raced.
The night, once peaceful and quiet, had turned into an arena full of bowls, and adrenaline filled my system, my body thrumming.
We'd made it out of my father's house, just barely, and I knew it was only a matter of time before they tracked us down. The alarm had already sounded, and I could hear the howls of the pack's wolves closing in.
"Mummy," Cleo whispered, her beautiful eyes wide with fear. "I'm scared."
"Mummy, what do we do?" Charles too showed an uncharacteristic solemnness, as if understanding this was life and death.
"I'm here, okay? Everything's fine," I said, though my voice broke at the last part. I gave both of their hands a squeeze and met Caleb's gaze with reassurance I didn't feel. "We'll be okay."
