Ashes of the Silent War: Shadow of the Leviathans
Chapter 10 – The Battle for Korrath
The city of Korrath had become a battlefield unlike any in human history. Smoke and fire rose in thick pillars over the shattered streets. The cries of fleeing civilians mingled with the thunderous footsteps of monsters.
Two Abyss Titans now dominated the skyline. One—the original Behemoth—had landed in the center of the city. The other, Colossus, was marching relentlessly toward the continent's capital.
Kael Varden surveyed the devastation from the roof of a half-collapsed skyscraper. His exosuit glowed faintly with the power of its reinforced plasma channels.
"This is it," he muttered, gripping his rail rifle. "The fight for Korrath begins now."
Confrontation with Behemoth
Behemoth roared, sending shockwaves across the city. Its claws smashed through armored vehicles like toys.
Kael charged down the main avenue, dodging debris and fire. His HUD marked fractures along Behemoth's chest and limbs.
He leapt onto a crumbling tower as the titan swung its arm. Sparks flew as metal collided with clawed armor.
"Target the fractures!" Kael barked to the Leviathan Hunters.
Missiles and plasma lances struck Behemoth repeatedly, forcing the Titan to stumble. But it was relentless. Each attack it survived left more destruction in its wake.
Kael activated the high-energy anti-core lance, his most powerful weapon yet. He fired a concentrated shot at a chest fracture. The armor cracked, revealing pulsing blue energy beneath.
Behemoth roared in fury, swiping at Kael with both claws. He rolled to the side, firing again. The beam hit the core directly, and a massive explosion sent Kael flying across the street.
He landed hard, blood streaming from a cut on his temple. But Behemoth staggered—slightly.
"Good," he muttered. "A start."
Lyra's Discovery
From a nearby rooftop, Lyra scanned Colossus with her sniper drone. The massive titan moved with calculated intelligence. It was avoiding all incoming attacks.
"This isn't just brute force," she murmured. "It's tactical."
Her drone projected a magnified view of the titan's armor. Then she noticed it: a faint shimmer along its spinal column, a subtle energy channel leading from its core to the back of its neck.
"There it is," she whispered. "The energy conduit. If we disrupt that…"
Kael's voice came over the comm, strained from the fight: "What are you seeing?"
"The back of the neck," Lyra explained. "The conduit connecting the core to the nervous matrix. Hit that, and you can destabilize the entire system."
Kael clenched his fists. "Then that's our next target."
Heavy Casualties
The battle raged through the streets. Leviathan Hunters moved like shadows between rubble and fire, firing plasma lances and rail rifles at Behemoth's fractures.
Explosions rocked the city. Soldiers fell. Streets were leveled.
Even with anti-core technology, the Titans' energy shields adapted quickly.
Kael's voice crackled through the comm. "We're losing ground! All units, pull back to secondary defense line!"
Despite the retreat, casualties were mounting. Sergeant Darven, one of the most decorated Hunters, fell to a swipe from Behemoth's tail.
Kael gritted his teeth. "We can't afford to lose anyone else. Focus fire, now!"
Adrian Voss Unleashes the Second Wave
Far across the globe, Adrian Voss observed the battle from his ocean fortress. His eyes were calm as dozens of holographic markers lit up: new Abyss Leviathans rising in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans.
"Humanity's resistance is impressive," he said softly. "But they are still fragile."
His hand swept across a control panel. Massive doors opened across the ocean fortress. Emerging from the depths were dozens of new Leviathans—smaller than Behemoth, but faster, smarter, and coordinated in packs.
"Release them," he ordered. "Let the continents know that this war has only begun."
Across Korrath, satellites picked up the incoming monsters. Panic swept across the global network. Cities braced for impact.
Humanity's Hope Hangs by a Thread
Kael climbed atop a collapsed building, looking toward Behemoth. Its chest was glowing faintly from the Hunters' concentrated fire.
Lyra's voice came again over the comm: "Kael… Colossus is heading straight for the capital. We need to take down Behemoth fast, or we'll have two Abyss Titans converging on civilization."
Kael's jaw hardened. "Then we finish this fight. No one else dies if I can stop Behemoth here."
He fired his plasma lance directly at the chest fracture again. Sparks flew. The titan screamed—a terrifying sound that rattled every window in Korrath.
But before it fell, a second massive swipe of its claw sent Kael flying into a building wall. Pain seared through his body, but he struggled to rise.
Lyra shouted: "Kael! You have to move!"
He gritted his teeth, spitting blood. "I'm not done yet."
Behind them, Behemoth roared. And from the horizon, the deep rumble of Colossus' footsteps shook the ground.
The war had escalated beyond anything humanity had faced.
And now… hope was balancing on a knife's edge.
