Chapter 31 - For Lady Candice

Sairis's POV

Sairis arched a brow slowly, then let out a short laugh, as if Henrietta had just said something ridiculous. It came out light at first, almost dismissive. But when he looked at her face and saw she was completely serious, the laughter died in his throat.

He stopped.

His expression changed. "You are damn serious?" he muttered, his voice low now.

Henrietta did not smile. She only sighed and dragged her fingers through her hair, looking more tired than before.

"I hate to say this," she said quietly, "but I am serious, Sairis. This is the only logical solution we have left."

Sairis shook his head at once. "No," he said flatly. He stepped back slightly as if the idea itself had pushed him. "There is nothing logical about this."

His mind was already moving fast, too fast. Images of the king, the dinner hall, the sharp eyes of the court. And worse, the memory of the last time he had done something like this.
