Chapter 3 - Chapter 2: Like Always

The morning air was still cool when Seo-yoon stepped out of her house.

The sky was pale, not fully awake yet, and the streets were quieter than they would be an hour later. She adjusted her bag on her shoulder and closed the gate behind her, the soft click echoing faintly in the stillness.

She didn't rush.

She never did.

There was a certain rhythm to her mornings, something steady and predictable. It made things easier. Manageable.

She walked down the familiar street, her steps slow, almost absent-minded, until she reached the corner.

He was already there.

Kang Ji-hoon stood near the lamppost, one hand in his pocket, the other loosely holding his bag strap. He wasn't looking at anything in particular, just standing there like he had been for a while.

Waiting.

Seo-yoon slowed slightly as she approached, though she didn't call out to him.

She didn't need to.

Ji-hoon glanced up the moment she came into view, like he had been expecting that exact moment.

"You're early," he said.

Seo-yoon stopped beside him. "You're earlier."

He gave a small shrug. "I woke up."

"That's your reason?"

"It worked, didn't it?"

She didn't answer, but the faintest hint of amusement crossed her face.

They started walking without another word.

It had always been like this. No greeting, no unnecessary conversation. Just the quiet understanding that they would walk together, like they always did.

Their steps fell into sync easily.

Seo-yoon kept her gaze forward, watching the road ahead, while Ji-hoon walked beside her, matching her pace without effort. The silence between them wasn't empty. It never was.

It was familiar.

After a few minutes, Seo-yoon spoke.

"You didn't bring a jacket."

Ji-hoon glanced down at himself briefly. "I'm fine."

"It's colder than yesterday."

"I said I'm fine."

Seo-yoon looked away, but not before noticing the slight stiffness in his shoulders.

Without saying anything else, she slipped her bag off one shoulder and pulled something out.

A folded hoodie.

She held it out toward him.

"Take it."

Ji-hoon stopped walking.

Seo-yoon turned slightly, her arm still extended. "You're going to complain about the cold later."

"I won't."

"You will."

He looked at her for a moment, like he was considering arguing further.

Then he took it.

"Thanks," he said quietly.

She nodded once, as if it wasn't a big deal.

They kept walking.

A few steps later, Ji-hoon spoke again.

"You didn't have to bring an extra."

"I didn't."

He glanced at her. "Then why do you have it?"

Seo-yoon hesitated for half a second.

"…I thought you might forget."

Ji-hoon didn't say anything after that.

But he didn't give the hoodie back either.

The school gates came into view soon after, students gathering in small groups, the noise gradually building again. The quiet of the morning faded as they stepped inside.

Min-chae spotted them almost immediately.

"There you are," she called, walking toward them with quick steps. "Together. Again. What a surprise."

Seo-yoon sighed softly. "Good morning to you too."

Min-chae crossed her arms, looking between them. "You two are so predictable it's actually painful."

Ji-hoon adjusted the hoodie slightly over his arm. "Then stop watching us."

"I would, but it's impossible not to," she said. "It's like watching the same drama every day with no new episodes."

Seo-yoon frowned. "What does that even mean?"

"It means," Min-chae said, lowering her voice slightly, "you're stuck."

Seo-yoon blinked. "We're not stuck."

Min-chae just smiled. "Sure."

Before Seo-yoon could respond, the bell rang.

The conversation ended there, but the words didn't quite leave.

They followed Seo-yoon into the classroom, slipping back into their usual places like nothing had changed.

Because nothing had.

Not yet.

Classes passed slowly, the hours stretching in that familiar way that made time feel heavier than it was. Seo-yoon found herself glancing at Ji-hoon more than once, though she wasn't entirely sure why.

He seemed the same.

Quiet. Focused. Unbothered.

And yet, something about Min-chae's words lingered in the back of her mind.

Stuck.

She didn't understand what that meant.

Or maybe she did, and didn't want to think about it.

When the final bell rang, Seo-yoon packed her bag quickly, standing up before most of the class had even moved.

Ji-hoon noticed.

"You're leaving early?" he asked.

"I have something to do," she replied, avoiding his gaze.

He paused for a moment. "I can wait."

"You don't have to."

"I know."

Seo-yoon hesitated, then shook her head slightly. "It might take a while."

Ji-hoon studied her for a second longer, like he was trying to decide something.

Then he nodded. "Okay."

It was simple.

Too simple.

Seo-yoon adjusted her bag and turned toward the door, her steps quicker than usual. She didn't look back this time.

Ji-hoon remained in his seat for a few seconds after she left.

The classroom slowly emptied, voices fading as people drifted out. The space grew quieter, emptier, until it was just him and a few others who hadn't rushed out yet.

He looked at the seat beside him.

Still there.

Always there.

He reached out and absent-mindedly moved her chair slightly closer to his, a small habit he didn't even think about anymore.

Then he stopped.

His hand lingered on the edge of the desk for a moment before he pulled it back.

After a while, he stood up and picked up his bag.

He walked out of the classroom alone.

Outside, the sky had cleared slightly, the earlier gray fading into something softer. The air still carried a hint of cold, but it wasn't as sharp as before.

Ji-hoon stepped through the school gates and paused.

For a brief moment, he looked down the road they usually walked together.

Then he started walking.

The path was the same.

The timing was the same.

Everything was exactly as it always had been.

Except this time, he was alone.

And for the first time in a long while, it didn't feel like just another day.

It felt like something small had shifted.

Something he couldn't quite name.

But something he couldn't ignore either.
