Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: First Blood in the Dark

The creatures didn't hesitate. The moment Ren stepped forward, they lunged—fast, silent, and deadly. One came low, another from the side, a third already mid-air. Ren's eyes sharpened. His body moved before his thoughts caught up. He twisted, barely avoiding the first strike as claws tore through the space where his chest had been. The second hit the ground beside him, cracking stone. Too fast. Too coordinated. "Tch—!" Ren pushed off the ground, sliding back. His grip tightened around the shard. His core pulsed—and for once, the mana didn't scatter. It gathered. Violent. Unstable. But contained. "Good," the voice in the dark murmured. Ren ignored it. Another creature rushed him. This one didn't fake. It went straight for his throat. Ren didn't dodge. He stepped in. His hand shot forward—mana flaring—and collided with the creature's body. Impact. A burst of dark energy exploded outward. The creature shattered mid-air, its form breaking apart like fragile glass before dissolving into nothing. Ren staggered back, breathing hard. "…That worked." No time to think. Two more closed in instantly. Ren raised his arm again—but this time, the energy slipped. "Damn—!" He barely ducked under a swipe, feeling the wind of it brush his hair. The second slammed into him, sending him skidding across the ground. Pain shot through his back. "Ghh—!" He rolled, forcing himself up. His breathing grew heavier. His control wasn't stable. Not yet. "You hesitate," the voice said calmly. Ren wiped blood from his lip. "…I'm learning." Another pulse from the shard. Stronger. This time, when the creatures moved—Ren saw it. Not their bodies. Their intent. A flicker. A pattern. Like the guardian before. "…Again?" he muttered. The next attack came. Ren stepped aside before it landed. Perfect timing. No wasted movement. His hand glowed again—darker now—and he drove it straight through the creature's chest. Another explosion. Another kill. He didn't stop. He moved. Fast. The third creature lunged—Ren pivoted, grabbed it mid-motion, and slammed it into the ground. The energy surged. It shattered beneath him. Silence returned. Heavy. Thick. Ren stood there, breathing hard, body shaking slightly. But he was still standing. "…Not bad," the voice said. Ren looked up, eyes sharp despite the exhaustion. "…I'm not here to impress you." A pause. Then—"…No. You're here to survive." The chamber shifted again. More movement. More creatures. More eyes opening in the dark. Ren exhaled slowly, rolling his shoulder as pain flared again. His core pulsed. Not breaking. Not leaking. Holding. For now. A small grin tugged at his lips. "…Then I guess I'm not done yet." He stepped forward again. Into the dark. Ready for the next wave.
