Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: The Deeper Layer

The path spiraled down like a wound carved into the world. Each step echoed too long, too hollow, as if the darkness below was listening and memorizing his presence. Ren kept one hand against the wall, steadying himself as the ground sloped unevenly beneath his feet. The shard rested in his other hand—quiet now, but not inactive. Waiting.

"…This keeps getting better," he muttered.

No answer came from above this time.

The voice was gone.

Or maybe… just watching.

Ren didn't like that thought.

He continued downward. The air grew colder with every step, but not in a natural way. It wasn't the chill of wind or night—it was absence. Like warmth itself had been stripped away. Even his breath felt thinner.

After a while, the path changed.

The carved stone walls faded into something smoother. Cleaner. More deliberate. This wasn't just a ruin anymore. This was construction. Design. Purpose.

"…Someone built all this," Ren said quietly.

And they had built it deep.

Very deep.

The path finally opened into another chamber—smaller than the last, but far more… complete. The floor was intact. The walls unbroken. Symbols lined every surface, brighter here, more active. They pulsed in slow rhythm, like a heartbeat echoing through the stone.

Ren stepped inside.

The moment he did—

His core reacted.

"Ghh—!"

He staggered, grabbing his chest as the pulse hit harder than before. Not pain alone—pressure. Like something was pushing back against him.

"…So this is where it gets worse," he breathed.

The shard answered.

A steady glow spread from it, darker than mana, heavier. It wrapped around his hand, then extended slightly—like it was anchoring him.

The pressure eased.

Not gone.

But manageable.

Ren exhaled slowly. "…You're keeping me steady."

The shard pulsed once in response.

"…I don't know if I should be grateful or worried."

A faint sound echoed from deeper within the chamber.

Click.

Ren froze.

Another sound followed.

Click.

Click.

Something was activating.

The symbols on the walls flared brighter—lines connecting, forming patterns that hadn't been visible before. The entire chamber lit up in dim, eerie light.

"…Great," Ren muttered.

At the center of the room—

A structure rose.

Stone sliding against stone as a platform lifted from the ground. On it stood a figure.

Still.

Silent.

Humanoid.

Ren's eyes narrowed. "…Another guardian?"

The figure didn't move at first. Its body was smoother than the last one, less jagged. More refined. Armor-like plates layered over its form, with faint glowing lines running between them.

Then—

Its head lifted.

Its eyes ignited.

A sharp, focused glow.

Not wild.

Not beast-like.

Controlled.

Aware.

Ren felt it immediately.

This one was different.

Stronger.

Smarter.

"…Yeah," he said under his breath. "Of course it is."

The guardian stepped forward.

One step—

—and the ground cracked beneath it.

Not from weight.

From force.

Compressed power leaking into every movement.

Ren adjusted his stance, his grip tightening around the shard. His core pulsed in response—uneasy, but ready.

"…No running this time," he said quietly.

The guardian tilted its head slightly—like it understood.

Then—

It disappeared.

Ren's eyes widened.

Too fast—

He moved instinctively, barely shifting as a strike tore through the space beside him. The impact shattered part of the wall behind him, fragments of stone exploding outward.

"Ghh—!"

Ren rolled, forcing distance. His heart slammed against his chest.

"…Way faster," he muttered.

The guardian didn't rush this time. It turned slowly, watching him. Studying.

Adapting.

"…Yeah, I don't like that."

Ren raised his hand slightly. The shard responded, dark energy gathering again—denser than before, but harder to control.

He exhaled. Focused.

The guardian moved again.

This time—

Ren saw it.

Not the body.

The intent.

A flicker.

A line.

He stepped to the side before the attack even began. The strike missed.

Ren countered instantly—driving his hand forward, energy flaring—

Impact.

But—

The guardian didn't break.

The energy struck its chest and dispersed, cracking part of its armor but not destroying it.

Ren's eyes widened slightly.

"…You're tougher."

The guardian responded.

Its arm snapped forward—

Ren blocked—but the force still sent him skidding backward, boots scraping hard against the ground.

Pain shot through his arms.

"…Yeah," he breathed. "…definitely tougher."

The shard pulsed again.

Stronger this time.

Demanding more.

Ren's grip tightened.

"…Alright," he said quietly.

"If you want more—"

His core surged.

Not leaking.

Not breaking.

Holding.

The dark energy around his hand thickened, spreading slightly up his arm, veins of faint light tracing along his skin.

Unstable.

Dangerous.

But controlled—barely.

Ren stepped forward again.

The guardian didn't wait.

They moved at the same time.

And this time—

Ren didn't hold back.
