Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: Pulse of the Fragment

The creatures came again—faster this time, less cautious. They had learned.

So had Ren.

He stepped into the first strike instead of away from it. The moment the shadow lunged, Ren twisted his body just enough—then drove his hand forward. The shard flared. Not bright. Not wild. Controlled. A sharp, dark pulse erupted from his palm.

Impact.

The creature didn't just shatter—it collapsed inward, like something had crushed it from the inside.

Ren's eyes widened slightly. "…That's new."

"Adaptation," the voice above said calmly. "You are beginning to understand."

Ren didn't respond. Another creature attacked from behind.

He didn't turn.

He felt it.

A flicker—like before. Intent. Motion. Timing.

He shifted to the side at the exact moment it struck, its claws missing him by inches. His hand snapped back—

—and caught it.

For a second, they froze like that.

Then the shard pulsed again.

A low, heavy vibration spread through his arm.

The creature trembled—then disintegrated, its form unraveling into fragments of dark mist.

Ren exhaled slowly. His breathing steadied. His body still hurt—but his movements were sharper now. Cleaner.

"…I can see them," he murmured.

"Not see," the voice corrected. "You perceive."

"Same thing."

"No."

Another wave surged forward.

More this time.

Five.

No—six.

They circled him, moving in irregular patterns. Testing. Waiting for a mistake.

Ren rolled his shoulder, ignoring the pain. His grip on the shard tightened.

"…Then I'll just keep 'perceiving.'"

They attacked together.

Ren moved.

Not faster.

Just earlier.

He stepped into the gaps before they formed. Slipped between claws before they struck. His hand flashed out again and again, each hit precise, each burst of energy controlled.

One fell.

Then another.

A third tried to grab him—Ren ducked, pivoted, and drove his hand upward through its chest. It burst apart instantly.

But the fourth—

—was different.

It didn't attack directly.

It waited.

Ren felt it too late.

A sharp pain tore across his side as its claw grazed him, ripping through cloth and skin.

"Ghh—!"

He staggered back. Blood darkened his clothes.

The creatures didn't stop.

They pressed harder. Faster.

Ren's breathing broke rhythm. His focus slipped for a fraction of a second—

—and that was enough.

Another strike came.

Too fast.

Too close.

Ren raised his arm—

—but he knew—

This one would hit.

Then—

The shard pulsed.

Hard.

Violent.

Everything slowed.

The creature's movement stretched, distorted. Its claws inches from his face.

Ren's vision sharpened unnaturally.

He saw everything.

The flow.

The timing.

The exact point—

He moved.

A small shift.

Barely anything.

But enough.

The claw missed.

Ren stepped inside its guard—and drove his hand forward with everything he had.

The energy didn't explode this time.

It pierced.

A concentrated burst shot straight through the creature, tearing a clean hole through its core before expanding outward.

The creature froze.

Then collapsed into nothing.

Silence fell again.

Ren stood there, breathing hard, his entire body shaking.

"…What was that…"

"The fragment," the voice said.

Ren looked down at the shard. It pulsed slower now. Calmer. Like it had just… fed.

"…That wasn't just mana."

"No."

"…Then what is it?"

A pause.

Then—

"Something closer to what I am."

Ren didn't like that answer.

Not even a little.

The ground trembled again.

But this time—

It wasn't the creatures.

It was the chains.

Ren's head snapped upward. The massive form above him shifted slightly, the glowing restraints tightening as cracks of light spread along their surface.

"…You're breaking out?" Ren asked.

"No."

But the pause that followed said otherwise.

"…Not yet."

Ren narrowed his eyes. "…And I'm helping you do that."

"You are helping yourself survive."

Another tremor. Stronger.

More cracks.

More pressure.

Ren exhaled slowly. "…Yeah. That's what I thought."

The darkness shifted again.

But this time—

Nothing came.

No creatures.

No movement.

Just silence.

Heavy. Waiting.

"…What now?" Ren asked.

"For now…" the voice said quietly, "…you descend."

Ren frowned. "…Descend where?"

The ground beneath him responded instantly.

A deep, grinding sound echoed through the chamber as the floor split open—revealing a narrow path spiraling downward into complete darkness.

Colder.

Heavier.

More dangerous.

Ren stared at it for a second.

Then sighed.

"…Of course it's deeper."

He stepped forward anyway.

Because turning back—

Wasn't an option anymore.
