Chapter 3 - Chapter 2:First impression last

The morning sunlight streamed through the glass walls of Rivera Group, hitting the polished floors and reflecting softly off the stacks of files on the desks. Sofia Mirano adjusted her blazer nervously, gripping her bag strap as she stepped off the elevator.

After yesterday, she thought she had a sense of what to expect. But today felt different. Today, she had to prove she wasn't just a new hire, that she could keep up with Leo Rivera's meticulous standards.

Her phone buzzed as she walked past the reception desk-Lucy, checking in like clockwork.

Lucy: "Morning! Survived day one without fainting? Or are you secretly plotting your escape?"

Sofia smiled, typing quickly as she walked.

Sofia: "Survived. Barely. But I'm ready. Today is all about proving I belong here."

Lucy: "Good. Just don't trip over his ego, or you'll be famous in the office for all the wrong reasons 😏."

Sofia laughed softly, pocketing her phone. Lucy's playful words always helped calm the nerves she didn't know she had.

By 8:45 a.m., Sofia was at her desk, arranging the day's schedule. The office was already alive with the soft hum of computers and quiet chatter. She glanced toward Leo's office, where he sat behind his massive mahogany desk, reviewing reports with precise attention. The sunlight highlighted the sharp line of his jaw and the dark intensity of his eyes as he scanned the documents.

Sofia felt a familiar flutter in her chest. She shook it off, reminding herself: Focus. Professional first.

"Miss Mirano."

She looked up. Leo's voice was calm, measured, commanding.

"Yes, Mr. Rivera?" she asked, standing politely at the threshold of his office.

"Those contracts from last night. I need them organized and ready for the board review by 10:00 a.m. Also, flag any discrepancies immediately."

"Understood." Her voice was steady, but inside, her heart skipped.

He studied her for a moment, then nodded and returned to his papers. She could feel his gaze lingering faintly as she moved to the stack of documents, her hands working quickly and efficiently.

Sofia had barely started when Leo's assistant, a tall, poised woman named Marina, approached.

"Mr. Rivera mentioned he wants a summary of the contracts by 10:00," Marina said softly. "Sofia, can you prioritize them?"

Sofia nodded. "Of course." She turned back to the papers, sorting them meticulously, her mind racing.

A soft sound behind her made her glance up. Leo had stood quietly, leaning against the edge of his desk, watching her work.

"You handle pressure well," he said, almost as an observation, not a compliment.

Sofia blinked, slightly flustered. "Thank you, sir. I... I try my best."

He didn't smile, didn't comment further, just returned to his work. And yet, that brief acknowledgment-quiet, restrained-sent an unexpected warmth through her chest.

By mid-morning, the first board report had been prepared. Sofia handed it to him carefully.

"Good," Leo said after a quick scan, his voice still calm but slightly softer than usual. "Your organization is precise. Keep this standard."

Sofia felt a small thrill at the rare praise, but she didn't let it show too much. Professionalism first.

During her coffee break later, she slipped into the small lounge to relax for a moment. Her phone buzzed-Lucy, as predicted.

Lucy: "Day two report: How much did your boss scare you today?"

Sofia chuckled quietly, typing back:

Sofia: "He's... strict, yes, but not impossible. I think he noticed me doing well. Maybe."

Lucy: "Noticed you? Flirting already? 😏"

Sofia rolled her eyes and shook her head. Flirting? No, not possible... yet she couldn't deny the small thrill she felt when Leo had said "good" earlier.

The afternoon brought a new challenge. A mistake in one of the contracts had been discovered-a minor clerical error that could have delayed a major client proposal. Sofia immediately flagged it and prepared a corrected version.

Leo's dark eyes scanned the corrections carefully. "Attention to detail," he said slowly, almost contemplatively. "Exactly what this company needs."

Sofia felt her pulse quicken. She had done exactly what he asked-and he had noticed.

"Thank you, sir," she said softly, trying to keep her composure.

"You anticipate the needs," Leo added. "That's... unusual. Most new hires don't notice until it's pointed out."

Sofia swallowed. "I like to be prepared."

He nodded slightly, a hint of approval in the tilt of his head. For a brief moment, Sofia caught a glimpse of something almost human-soft, observant, and private behind the calm, controlled exterior.

Later, finishing paperwork for the day, Sofia leaned back slightly in her chair, stretching her shoulders. Her phone buzzed again-Lucy, probably sensing it was time for a debrief.

Lucy: "How's the 'CEO of intensity' treating you today?"

Sofia: "Impressive... demanding... and somehow... not impossible. I think he might even... notice me."

Lucy: "Notice you? That's CEO code for 'I'm already intrigued.' Just saying 😏. Dinner tomorrow? You need to vent about surviving day two."

Sofia smiled, shaking her head at her friend's relentless teasing. "Sure. Dinner tomorrow."

She glanced toward Leo's desk one last time before leaving. He was still absorbed in his work, perfectly composed, but there was a subtle shift she couldn't ignore-a recognition, perhaps, of her competence. And maybe something else.

Something she didn't fully understand yet.

As she left the office, the city lights beginning to glow outside, Sofia felt a quiet thrill. She had survived her second day. She had made an impression. And without realizing it, she was already looking forward to tomorrow.

Because somehow, the thought of seeing Leo Rivera again made her chest tighten in a way that wasn't just about work.
