Chapter 6 - Chapter 5:The Way He Looks at Her

The next morning arrived with a soft golden light spreading across the city, reflecting against the tall glass windows of Rivera Group.

Sofia Mirano stepped into the building with a calm breath, adjusting the strap of her bag as she walked toward the elevators. The lobby already hummed with quiet activity—employees greeting one another, heels tapping against marble floors, and the low murmur of business conversations.

But Sofia's mind wasn't on the office chatter.

It was on yesterday.

Lunch with Leo Rivera.

Even thinking about it made her cheeks warm slightly.

She pressed the elevator button and pulled out her phone.

Right on time, Lucy had already sent a message.

Lucy:

Morning, Miss CEO-Lunch-Date.

Sofia groaned softly under her breath.

Sofia:

It wasn't a date.

The typing bubble appeared instantly.

Lucy:

Sure. The cold CEO who scares the entire office just casually orders lunch for his secretary. Totally normal.

Sofia smiled despite herself.

Sofia:

It was work.

Lucy:

If he feeds you again today, I'm officially suspicious.

Sofia laughed quietly as the elevator doors opened.

The twelfth floor was already alive with activity when she arrived.

Sofia settled at her desk and began reviewing the day's schedule.

Leo had a full morning—two internal meetings, a call with overseas investors, and a strategy presentation in the afternoon.

She prepared the necessary files quickly, moving with the quiet confidence she had gained over the past few days.

Just as she finished arranging the documents, Leo's office door opened.

He stepped out with the same composed presence he always carried.

Tall.

Sharp.

Effortlessly commanding.

His dark eyes moved across the office briefly before settling on Sofia.

"Good morning, Miss Mirano."

Sofia stood politely.

"Good morning, Mr. Rivera."

She walked into his office and placed the usual coffee on his desk.

Black.

No sugar.

No cream.

Leo took a sip and nodded slightly.

Perfect.

He glanced at the schedule she placed beside the cup.

"You organized the presentation materials?"

"Yes, sir. They're ready for the strategy meeting at two."

"Good."

Sofia turned to leave, but something in the office hallway caught her attention.

A woman was approaching Leo's office with confident strides.

She was tall, elegantly dressed, and carried herself with the ease of someone used to attention.

Sofia recognized her immediately.

Vanessa Clarke.

One of the senior marketing directors in the company.

Vanessa stopped at the door and smiled at Leo.

"Good morning, Leo."

Sofia noticed something immediately.

She didn't call him Mr. Rivera.

Just Leo.

Leo looked up calmly.

"Good morning, Vanessa."

Vanessa leaned lightly against the doorframe.

"I was wondering if you had time to review the campaign proposal with me today."

Her voice carried a subtle softness.

The kind people sometimes used when they wanted to be charming.

Sofia felt strangely awkward standing there.

Vanessa's eyes briefly flicked toward her.

Then back to Leo.

Leo remained completely composed.

"Send the proposal to my email," he said evenly.

"I'll review it later."

Vanessa smiled again, but Sofia noticed the slight disappointment in her expression.

"Of course."

As she walked away, her heels clicked slowly against the floor.

Sofia quietly returned to her desk.

She wasn't sure why, but something about the interaction lingered in her thoughts.

Later that morning, the office buzzed with preparation for an important internal meeting.

Several department heads gathered in the conference room while Sofia organized the presentation documents.

She entered the room just as Leo began speaking.

His voice carried effortlessly across the table.

"Rivera Group's next quarter will depend heavily on strategic partnerships. We need efficiency, accuracy, and clear communication."

The executives around the table nodded.

Sofia distributed the documents one by one.

As she handed a folder to Vanessa Clarke, the woman glanced at her briefly.

Then she looked at Leo.

"You've been working closely with your new secretary," Vanessa said casually.

Her tone sounded light, but Sofia sensed the underlying curiosity.

Leo didn't react immediately.

"Yes," he said simply.

Vanessa leaned back in her chair.

"I hope she can handle the pace here."

Sofia felt the subtle tension in the room.

Some of the executives shifted slightly in their seats.

But Leo spoke calmly.

"Miss Mirano has handled every task efficiently so far."

His words were simple.

But firm.

Sofia blinked slightly, surprised.

Vanessa gave a small smile.

"Well, that's good to hear."

The meeting continued, but Sofia felt something warm settle in her chest.

Leo hadn't just answered.

He had defended her.

When the meeting ended, the executives slowly filed out of the room.

Sofia began collecting the documents from the table.

Leo remained seated at the head of the table, reviewing notes.

"Miss Mirano."

She looked up.

"Yes, sir?"

"You handled the meeting materials well."

Sofia nodded politely.

"Thank you."

Leo stood and walked toward the door.

But just before leaving, he paused slightly.

"Don't concern yourself with comments from other departments."

Sofia blinked.

He had noticed.

"Yes, sir," she said softly.

For a moment, his eyes lingered on her.

Then he left the room.

During her lunch break, Sofia finally sat down at her desk and checked her phone.

Lucy had sent three messages already.

Lucy:

Important news.

Lucy:

I finished my new design.

Lucy:

And I need your opinion.

Sofia smiled and opened the image Lucy sent.

It was a beautiful evening dress.

Elegant.

Soft fabric.

Deep blue with subtle silver details along the neckline.

Sofia typed quickly.

Sofia:

Lucy, this is gorgeous.

The reply came instantly.

Lucy:

I knew you'd say that.

Lucy:

Also, how's the mysterious CEO today?

Sofia hesitated.

Then typed.

Sofia:

He defended me in a meeting.

Lucy's typing bubble appeared immediately.

Lucy:

DEFENDED YOU?

Lucy:

Oh he definitely notices you.

Sofia shook her head, smiling slightly.

Sofia:

Lucy…

Lucy:

Just saying.

Sofia locked her phone, still smiling.

The afternoon passed quickly as Sofia prepared the strategy presentation.

At exactly two o'clock, Leo entered the conference room again.

The investors arrived shortly after.

Sofia stood quietly near the screen, ready to manage the documents and slides.

Leo began speaking with his usual calm authority.

Every sentence precise.

Every explanation clear.

But as the meeting progressed, Sofia noticed something unusual.

A few times during the presentation…

Leo glanced in her direction.

Not long.

Not obvious.

But enough for her to notice.

And each time their eyes met for a brief moment, Sofia quickly looked away.

Her heart beating just a little faster.

By the time the workday ended, the office had grown quiet again.

Employees packed their bags and headed home.

Sofia finished organizing the last of the files when Leo's voice came from his office.

"Miss Mirano."

She stepped inside.

"Yes, Mr. Rivera?"

Leo closed the folder in front of him.

"You managed today's schedule efficiently."

Sofia smiled slightly.

"Thank you."

He studied her for a moment.

Then said something unexpected.

"You work hard."

Sofia felt warmth spread across her chest again.

"I try my best."

Leo nodded once.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The quiet between them wasn't uncomfortable.

Just… different.

Finally, Sofia gathered the remaining papers.

"Good night, Mr. Rivera."

"Good night, Miss Mirano."

She turned and walked out of the office.

But as Leo watched her leave, something in his expression softened.

Because without realizing it…

He had begun to notice the little things.

The way she organized every detail.

The way she stayed calm under pressure.

The way her eyes lit up when she smiled.

And Leo Rivera rarely noticed anyone.

But Sofia Mirano was slowly becoming impossible to ignore.
