The ancient door opened beneath the valley.
Not outward.
Downward.
The earth split into perfect circles, each one descending farther into darkness until the valley seemed to have become an enormous staircase leading into the heart of the world.
Veyne stood at its edge.
His eyes remained black.
Aurelia held his hand.
"Veyne."
Nothing.
She tightened her grip.
"Look at me."
His fingers moved.
Barely.
The darkness beneath his skin spread toward his heart.
Aurelia saw black veins appearing along his neck.
She grabbed his face.
"Stay with me."
His eyes flickered.
For one second, they became themselves again.
"Aurelia…"
"Yes."
"Run."
"No."
"You need to."
"I said no."
His expression softened.
"You always were stubborn."
"And you're always trying to sacrifice yourself."
She looked toward the stranger.
"So I suppose we're both predictable."
Veyne almost smiled.
Then the darkness swallowed his eyes again.
The stranger raised his hand.
Veyne's body lifted from the ground.
Aurelia held on.
The force pulled them apart.
Her fingers slipped.
"No!"
Veyne disappeared into the darkness below.
Aurelia jumped after him.
The boy screamed:
"Wait!"
She didn't.
She fell through darkness.
Memories flashed around her.
Aurelia saw Veyne as a child.
Veyne as a king.
Veyne as a monster.
Veyne as a stranger.
Veyne as her enemy.
Veyne as her lover.
Seven endings.
Eight beginnings.
Then something different.
A life she had never seen.
Aurelia and Veyne stood on opposite sides of a battlefield.
They weren't fighting.
They were commanding armies.
And between them stood a child.
The same silver-eyed boy.
The vision ended.
Aurelia landed hard.
She looked around.
Veyne was nowhere.
The chamber was enormous.
At its center floated a black heart made of glass.
It pulsed slowly.
THUMP.
The entire chamber moved.
THUMP.
Aurelia felt her own heart answer.
THUMP.
Veyne appeared inside the glass.
His eyes were closed.
Aurelia ran toward him.
"Veyne!"
Her hands touched the surface.
He opened his eyes.
"Aurelia…"
She could hear him.
But he couldn't hear her.
Between them was a wall of black crystal.
Then the crowned stranger appeared behind her.
"You finally found it."
Aurelia turned.
"The heart."
He nodded.
"The heart of the first Veyne."
She looked back at the imprisoned man.
"Why is he inside?"
"Because every version of Veyne carries a fragment of me."
Aurelia frowned.
"And if you take him?"
"I become complete."
"What happens to him?"
The stranger smiled.
"He disappears."
Aurelia raised her sword.
"You're not touching him."
The stranger laughed.
"You still think this is about saving Veyne."
He stepped closer.
"This is about saving reality."
Aurelia's expression hardened.
"Explain."
"Your existence was never meant to continue after the cycle."
"Why?"
"Because you and Veyne were never separate beings."
Aurelia froze.
"You were two halves of the same original consciousness."
The stranger pointed toward the black heart.
"When you separated, the universe divided with you."
Aurelia whispered:
"And you?"
"I was the first attempt to put it back together."
She stared at him.
"You failed."
His smile disappeared.
"You created love instead."
The stranger looked at Veyne.
"And love was unpredictable."
Aurelia understood.
"That is why the cycles existed."
"Yes."
"You kept separating us."
"Yes."
"You kept making us find each other."
"Yes."
"You wanted to control what we became."
He smiled.
"Exactly."
Aurelia looked at the black heart.
"And now?"
"Now I will finish what began before time."
He raised his hand.
The heart cracked.
Veyne screamed.
Aurelia felt the pain inside her own chest.
She screamed his name.
The stranger smiled.
Then a child's voice echoed through the chamber.
"Enough."
The silver-eyed boy stood behind them.
The stranger turned.
"You."
The boy's expression had changed.
He no longer looked frightened.
He looked ancient.
"You shouldn't exist."
The boy smiled.
"Neither should you."
The stranger attacked.
The boy raised his hand.
The chamber exploded with light.
The two forces collided.
Aurelia shielded herself.
The black heart began spinning.
Veyne's body was pulled from it.
The stranger reached for him.
Aurelia moved first.
She grabbed Veyne.
The stranger caught her wrist.
For one moment, the three of them stood locked together.
Light.
Darkness.
Something between them.
Then Aurelia understood.
The boy wasn't the weapon.
He was the bridge.
She looked at him.
"Help me."
The boy nodded.
He reached for both Aurelia and Veyne.
The three touched.
The chamber went silent.
And every world disappeared.
