Jade turned to Van, but she noticed him still staring at the table, not at Dustin but at the man he was seated with. She could not help but wonder who he was and why it made him so still.
"Van?" she whispered, calling him by his name for the first time in front of him. But he did not respond. If he felt threatened too, then maybe she should be more worried. Jade reached for the glass of wine.
"Do not touch that glass," he said quietly, as though it were a weapon.
"I…"
"Just don't." He finally looked away from the table, his eyes now fixed ahead. With his hand, he pushed the glass farther away, and Jade almost rolled her eyes because that was exactly what she had wanted to do as well.
