POV: Scarlett Mitchell
The security guard doesn't try to stop her. Maybe he knows better. Maybe he can see it in her face that she's not leaving without seeing Cameron.
The elevator ride to the top floor takes forever. Scarlett has her hands clenched into fists. She can feel her heartbeat in her throat.
When the doors open, his office is empty except for one light at the far end. She walks toward it like she's walking toward everything that matters.
Cameron is sitting at his desk with his head in his hands. He looks like he's been there for hours. Maybe days. His hair is messy. His jaw is dark with stubble. His shirt is wrinkled. He hasn't slept. She can tell because she can see the same exhaustion on him that she feels inside herself.
He doesn't look up when she enters. But he knows she's there.
"We need to talk," Scarlett says.
"There's nothing to talk about," he responds. His voice is rough and broken.
