"I am not expecting things to be easy," he replied calmly. "I just want the opportunity to try."
I watched his face carefully while he spoke, trying to see if there was any sign that he was lying or manipulating the situation. But the longer I looked at him, the more I realized that he truly meant every word he was saying.
Still, the timing of everything made it hard for me to think clearly.
"And if I refuse?" I asked quietly.
"Then I will still donate the blood," he said.
That answer surprised me.
For a moment, I just stared at him, trying to see if he truly meant it or if he was simply saying it to make the situation easier. His face, however, did not change. He looked calm, serious, and very certain about what he had just said.
"But I hope you will give me that chance," he added.
For several seconds, I said nothing.
