Chapter 17 - The One Who Stayed

School had never felt like this before.

Not loud.

Not chaotic.

But tense.

Like everyone was waiting for something…

Even if they didn't know what.

But we did.

I walked through the hallway slowly.

Every step felt heavier.

Every face…

Felt like it was watching me.

Maybe they were.

Or maybe…

It was just him.

"You look like hell."

I didn't need to turn.

Noah.

"Didn't sleep," I replied.

"Yeah," he muttered.

"None of us did."

Silence.

Because we all knew why.

"Did he contact you again?" he asked.

"No."

That was the truth.

But somehow…

That felt worse.

We reached the main hall.

Students everywhere.

Normal.

Laughing.

Talking.

Normal.

And yet…

Nothing about this felt normal.

"Where are they?" I asked.

Noah glanced around.

"Cafeteria."

Of course.

Always the same place.

We walked in.

And there they were.

Emily.

Sarah.

Ryan.

All sitting at the same table.

Just like before.

Like nothing had changed.

But everything had.

Emily looked at me first.

Her expression shifted instantly.

"You went," she said.

Not a question.

"I had to."

"What happened?" Sarah asked.

I looked at all of them.

"He's alive," I said.

Silence.

Noah exhaled slowly.

"We know that."

"No," I said.

"You don't understand."

Ryan leaned back slightly.

"Then explain."

I hesitated.

Because even saying it felt dangerous.

"He said… someone stayed," I said.

Everything froze.

Noah's expression changed.

Emily's hand tightened around the table.

Sarah didn't move.

But Ryan…

Ryan's smile disappeared.

"What?" Emily whispered.

"He wasn't alone after we left," I continued.

Silence.

Heavy.

"And whoever stayed…" I added

"…he knows who it was."

No one spoke.

No one breathed.

Because now…

It wasn't just about guilt.

It was about exposure.

"Who was it?" Noah asked.

I shook my head.

"He didn't tell me."

"That's not funny," Ryan said coldly.

"I'm not joking."

Silence.

And then—

"Maybe he's lying," Noah said quickly.

"No," Sarah said.

We all looked at her.

"He's not."

That certainty…

It hit different.

"How do you know?" I asked.

She didn't answer.

Instead…

She stood up.

Slow.

"I need air," she said.

And walked away.

That was strange.

Too strange.

"Something's off," I muttered.

"No kidding," Noah replied.

But Emily…

Emily was staring at Ryan.

Hard.

"Ryan…" she said slowly.

He didn't look at her.

"Don't," he replied.

That was it.

That was the moment.

"What?" I asked.

Silence.

"Ryan," Emily insisted.

"Say something."

He exhaled.

"I already said everything that matters."

"No," she shook her head.

"You didn't."

Tension exploded instantly.

"What is she talking about?" Noah asked.

Ryan didn't answer.

"Ryan," I said

"were you the one who stayed?"

Silence.

Everyone froze.

Because that question…

It changed everything.

"Answer me."

Ryan slowly looked at me.

And for the first time…

He didn't look in control.

"I left with you," he said.

"That's not an answer."

"Yes, it is."

"No," Emily said quietly.

"It's not."

We all turned to her.

Her eyes were filled with something different now.

Not fear.

Truth.

"Emily…" Ryan warned.

"Stop," she said.

Silence.

Because now…

She wasn't holding back anymore.

"You didn't leave," she said.

Everything stopped.

"What?" Noah whispered.

"You stayed," she continued.

"You told us to go… and you stayed."

My heart dropped.

"No…"

Ryan didn't move.

Didn't deny it.

Didn't say anything.

"That's not true," I said.

But my voice…

Didn't sound convincing.

Emily's eyes were locked on him.

"Tell them," she said.

Silence.

Long.

Heavy.

And then—

Ryan smiled.

Slow.

Cold.

"I was wondering when you'd say it."

Everything broke.

"You stayed?" Noah asked.

"Yes."

The word hit like a bomb.

"Why?" I demanded.

Ryan leaned forward slightly.

"Because someone had to fix it."

My chest tightened.

"What does that mean?"

Silence.

Then—

"He was still breathing."

Everything stopped.

No.

No way.

"You saw it?" I asked.

"Yes."

My head started spinning.

"And what did you do?" Emily asked, her voice shaking.

Ryan looked at all of us.

One by one.

And then—

He said it.

"I finished it."

Silence.

Pure.

Dead silence.

Emily covered her mouth.

Noah stepped back.

I felt like the ground disappeared beneath me.

"No…"

"He was going to destroy us," Ryan said calmly.

"I made sure he couldn't."

"You killed him?" I whispered.

Ryan didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

Everything shattered.

Because now…

This wasn't an accident.

This wasn't a mistake.

This was murder.

And then—

A voice echoed behind us.

Cold.

Familiar.

"And you still believe that?"

We all turned.

And there he was.

Standing in the cafeteria.

Alive.

Watching us.

Smiling.

Ryan froze.

For the first time…

Ryan Blake looked afraid.

I buried the truth

with blood and control

I silenced the past

to protect us as a whole

but the ghost I created…

came back with a soul
